Brazil Meat Giants 'Sold Rotten Beef and Poultry'

Authorities have closed three meat-packing plants in Brazil amid allegations that two of the world's biggest meat processors have been selling rotten beef and poultry for years.

Three factories belonging to Brazilian meat giants BRF and JBS have been raided and closed down by police investigating reports that the companies have been bribing officials and politicians to ignore rotting and substandard meat. It has the potential to undermine a $12bn industry which exports all over the world.

US President Donald Trump and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel have held their first face-to-face meeting. They emerged stating their commitment to defence spending and emphasising the need for fair, free trade deals. Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has been meeting global finance counterparts from the G20 group in Baden Baden, Germany, to calm fears of a global trade war.
