Should there be a ban on breeding these adorable cats?
Animal welfare campaigners are calling on the Scottish government to impose a breeding ban on ‘Scottish fold cats.’ The felines have floppy ears, big eyes and prominent whiskers but because of a gene mutation they can be prone to severe health problems including arthritis.
The adorable cats have become popular amongst celebrities including Taylor Swift and Mia Farrow.
Sharon Comrie, superintendent for animal rescue at the SSPCA, told 5 live:
“As soon as any celebrities start to take on different breeds everybody wants them then, it becomes a fashion symbol.”
However she also says that if they are “bred properly” by “ethical breeders” then there is “less likelihood to be so many health problems.”
