‘Cricket may start to die’ without new T20 tournament
Former ECB chairman Lord MacLaurin believes the proposed new Twenty20 tournament in English cricket will bring money back into the game.
The ECB board has voted unanimously to formally start the process that will bring about a new eight-team T20 competition. The tournament will involve new city-based teams playing 36 games in 38 days and is due to begin in 2020.
Speaking to Eleanor Oldroyd, Lord MacLaurin said the introduction of Twenty20 cricket in 2002 was “the best thing to ever happen to country cricket” and believes that if cricket “doesn’t move with the times, it may start to die”.
