Mills: There’s no excuse for Shaw to be overweight
“Other players look at Luke Shaw and think ‘he’s getting away with it’”
Danny Mills says there is no excuse for Manchester United’s Luke Shaw to be overweight or unfit.
Former footballer Mills was speaking in response to Manchester United manager Jose Mournho publicly questioning the 21-year-old’s commitment to the club. Shaw signed for £27m in June 2014 but he broke his leg in two places during a Champions League game in September 2015 which kept him out of the game for almost a year. In November, he was criticised by Mourinho for missing the Premier League win over Swansea after he said he was not able to play. Mourinho claims Shaw compares unfavourably to fellow defenders Ashley Young, Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind. Shaw has only played 15 times for the Red Devils this season and has not figured since last month's 1-1 draw against Bournemouth.
Speaking in 5 live’s Monday Night Club, Mills said football was about “discipline, dedication and desire” and that the defender was not “giving his all or putting in”. Mills also commented that other players were probably looking at Shaw and thinking, “he’s getting away with this, how come he can get away with it and we can’t?”
