Patient ‘Helen’: Ketamine saved my life
Depression sufferer 'Helen' says ketamine stopped her from taking her own life after she took part in a Ketamnine treatment programme. The study has found the drug helps some who haven’t responded to other treatments.
‘Helen’, who has been having treatment for an eating disorder and severe depression for more than 20 years told 5 live Breakfast:“I was desperate to the point where I had absolutely made up my mind I could not carry on.â€
“One advantage over anti-depressants is that it works very fast in lowering the desperation you feel. It saved my life, without a doubt.â€
Psychiatrists in Oxford who've treated just over a hundred depressed patients with ketamine say it should be used more widely by the NHS. They're calling for a national registry so that doctors who prescribe the drug.
