Former UK ambassador to Syria, Peter Ford, told ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Newsnight that Syria would "implode" and that there "would be a bloodbath" if President Assad were to go.

Questioned by Newsnight's Emily Maitlis, Mr Ford said there was no moderate opposition waiting to take over.

Reza Afshar, an independent diplomat, told Newsnight a political and military strategy was needed to bring the crisis in Syria to a close.
