Is 'Labour finished'? McDonnell responds to lifelong voter
Prime minister Theresa May has called for a general election to take place on 8 June 2017.
5 live spoke to a lifelong Labour voter from the North East of England, who said: "I don't think I'll vote again... Labour's finished."
"My grandparents and father would be absolutely turning in their graves at what's going on today."
Shadow chancellor John McDonnell responded, saying Labour aren't finished: "I'm sad he has taken that view because I was in that area when the Conservatives refused to do anything for the steel industry."
"Now we're in the debate on the general election and I'm hoping we can turn that around," McDonnell added.
