Donald Trump campaigned hard on tax. Now we know what his team wants to do about it. The White House wants to cut the income tax rate paid by public corporations to 15% from 35%. And compel US businesses to repatriate offshore profits at a rate much lower than the current 35%. But already members of Congress are talking about watering this down. Daniel Lippman of Politico gives us his verdict on the president's opening bid.
'Universal basic income' involves getting the state to pay a fixed sum to all its citizens, whether or not they have a job. Social scientists, technologists, and politicians from across the political spectrum believe that it could solve the unemployment problem that automation and artificial intelligence are expected to create. The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s Paul Moss is in Finland, where a basic income pilot is underway but has already been controversial.
The wave of violence spreading across Venezuela continues to take lives. At least 29 people have died in the protests against President Maduro since they began at the start of April. The Organisation of American States has agreed to a special meeting of foreign ministers, despite Venezuela's objections, to take measures to deal with the crisis. We hear from OAS spokesman Sergio Jellinek.
