Knowing the purpose of a text.
Lee and Beth return from holiday to lots of mail. A membership letter contains useful information, a neighbourhood leaflet provides news, comments and criticism. An overdue electricity bill has key words, such as “overdue” to tell them they are late paying their bill. Beth is preparing for a job interview at a health centre, and she needs to know their aims and values. She does a quick scan of the brochures – looking quickly through information to find what she’s looking for. She also scans the website using drop-down menus and scanning categories. Once she’s found the information, she skims it to get the gist of the aims and values. Lee and Beth are in the park, Rob arrives with a newspaper, saying they are the worst team in the league. They look at the writing and whether it’s fact or opinion. Opinion contains words like “have looked”. Factual analysis is more reliable – evidence is given, facts are printed and the tone is more formal.
