Decriminalising drugs: A good thing?

Evidence from Portugal shows decriminalising drugs drives down use and related deaths

Fewer than one in ten adults in England and Wales now take drugs, according to the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Office, but drug-related deaths have risen sharply.

Anne-Marie Cockburn, whose daughter died after taking ecstasy, wants all drugs to be legally regulated. She tells Sarah Montague: "Drugs are made even more dangerous when controlled by gangsters."

Ron Hogg is the police, crime and victims commissioner for County Durham and Darlington. He says he wants to embrace evidence based approaches. He adds: "If the government is serious, we want to work with them...we have a drug induced death rate three times higher than Europe."

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Office Minister Sarah Newton argues it is about making children aware of the risks. She adds: "There isn't a safe way to take psychoactive substances."
