Getting the right tone.

Helen is at the doctor’s surgery. When she speaks to the receptionist she uses formal language, a polite tone. When she’s speaking to her friend she is more informal and chatty. Sally is walking down the street, where there’s lots of words all around her. Some language like a bank leaflet, or email to a job interview is formal. Some is informal, such as signs saying “Come try our pies!” or texts from friends. Helen is at home, writing an email applying for a job. She’s using formal, polite language for that. Meanwhile she’s responding to a text from her friend about plans that evening, and using informal language.
