Helen is at the doctor鈥檚 surgery. When she speaks to the receptionist she uses formal language, a polite tone. When she鈥檚 speaking to her friend she is more informal and chatty. Sally is walking down the street, where there鈥檚 lots of words all around her. Some language like a bank leaflet, or email to a job interview is formal. Some is informal, such as signs saying 鈥淐ome try our pies!鈥� or texts from friends. Helen is at home, writing an email applying for a job. She鈥檚 using formal, polite language for that. Meanwhile she鈥檚 responding to a text from her friend about plans that evening, and using informal language.
