How much do you need to earn to afford to rent a flat?
To rent a one-bedroom flat in certain parts of London you’d need to earn £81,000 a year. A new study into the affordability of rental properties in the UK shows just how expensive renting in London has now become. The average wage in London is £33,000 a year, meaning most renters are having to spend between 40% and 85% of their salary on their accommodation. Most letting agents suggest a property is only affordable if you earn more than the monthly rent multiplied by 30. Peter White hears from people who rent properties in London and Newcastle, and talks to a rental expert.
