Coffice workers: should they be moved on or encouraged?
Just under five million people in Britain, or 15% of all those in work, are self-employed. In some places the figure is significantly higher. And you may have seen evidence of it in your local coffee shop, if it’s frequented by the so-called ‘coffice workers’ setting up their laptops and settling down. Not all are self-employed of course, but the combination of coffee and free WiFi is compelling. Except that some cafes are losing patience and switching off the link to the internet. Douglas Fraser, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Scotland’s Business and Economy Editor, took up the onerous challenge of investigating ‘coffice’ life.
