Enoch Powell: Brexit’s Forefather?
It is almost 50 years since former Conservative politician Enoch Powell gave his infamous ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech, warning of civil unrest if unrestricted immigration into the UK was allowed to continue. The incident, which sent shockwaves through the UK and effectively ended Powell’s political career, is the focus of ‘What Shadows’ currently showing in Edinburgh’s Lyceum Theatre. Bill Whiteford spoke to actor Ian McDiarmid about playing the politician, and discusses with Simon Heffer, Powell’s biographer, and journalist Nick Jones, whether his legacy has been crystalized in the Brexit debate.
