A former defence chief has warned cuts in the defence budget would make the UK more vulnerable to attacks from China and Russia. He said they would be able to hold the "UK at military risk at very short notice".

Sir Richard Barrons said the current state of defence did not meet the demands of the "contemporary age" and he urged the government to invest in ways of diversifying the sector.
