Post-16 maths: Ratio clip 3

Ratio is how you talk about the amount of one thing compared to another. If you have to mix one part of squash with four parts of water – that’s a ratio of 1:4. The ratio will tell you the total amount too – if mix 4 parts of water with one part of quash – you’ll have 5 parts in total. You usually talk about ratios in the smallest number, so instead of saying 6:3 you’d say 2:1. You can also use ratios to scale recipes up and down. If 300g of pasta will feed 4 people, we have a ratio of pasta to people of 300 : 4. But you’ve got 12 people for dinner – three times more people coming than the recipe states. If you multiply the number of people by three – you need to multiply the amount of pasta by three too – so 900g.
