Post-16 maths: Fractions clip 2
When you split a whole thing into equal parts you get fractions. If you split something in two parts – you get halves. If you split something into 4 equal parts that’s quarters. The number on the bottom of a fraction tells you how many the whole has been divided into. The number on the top of a fraction tells you how many parts of the whole you have. Different fractions can represent the same amount of the whole – 2/4 is the same as ½ or 2/6 is the same as 1/3.
Fractions can also be written as decimals and percentages. The main ones are ½, 50%, 0.5 and ¼, 0.25, 25% and ¾, 75%, 0.75 they’re common so it’s worth learning them.
