A short docu-drama, broken into three parts, demonstrating how important Level 1 Functional Skills English Speaking, Listening and Communication skills are to professional relationships in the Health and Social Care Sector. In particular, the film demonstrates the skills of speaking and listening, and communicating, carefully, giving cogent responses, being persuasive and using conversation to move things forward. In Part 1, a nursing assistant discusses discharge arrangements with a patient, but the patient has mislaid his keys, which is likely to affect the timing of his discharge. In Part 2, the nursing assistant and a staff nurse help the patient to remember a means of obtaining an alternative set of keys, and a telephone number is provided which the nursing team agree to follow up. In Part 3 their efforts prove successful and discharge is now agreed. The nurse completes a written discharge sheet to ensure the hospital has all the necessary information and the patient can return home safely. Interviews with both members of the nursing team explain why English FS are crucial in their roles.
