David Byrne talks to Elizabeth Alker about American Utopia
David Byrne this month released his new solo album American Utopia. It came out on Nonesuch Records and it's his first solo album to make it into the top ten on the Billboard Hot 200, reaching No. 3.
This is his first album since Gown Backwards came out in 2004, although he released Here Lies Love, his collaboration with Norman Cook in 2010, and Love This Giant, his collaboration with St Vincent came out in 2012.
During the making of American Utopia, David started a project called Reasons to be Cheerful, a quest to find good news happening around the world and usually in the form of social action and social engagement projects, charity events and projects that are concerned with improving the environment. He presented a series of lectures based on his research and there is an online document of all his findings at reasonstobecheerful.world
David is currently on tour in The US. He comes to the UK in June for a tour which starts at The New Theatre in Oxford on June 14 and sees him go to Glasgow, Birmingham, Manchester and two dates at the Hammersmith Apollo.
