How Soderbergh's Unsane continues cinema's obsession with asylums
Steven Soderbergh’s psychological thriller Unsane, starring The Crown's Clare Foy, is in cinemas this week. It’s about a bright, but troubled, young businesswoman who unwittingly signs herself into a mental institution after being stalked. The film has been noted for its innovative use of technology because it was shot on smartphones. But how innovative is the way it depicts psychiatric facilities compared to the films of the past? The novelist and journalist Matt Thorne puts what he calls Soderbergh's "barmy B movie" into context.
