The new trend in BCAA protein powders: are they safe?
Sales of protein powders and other fitness supplements are rising dramatically. Protein powders, which started out as a niche product for body-builders, have become mainstream. The next big thing seems to be branch-chain amino acids or BCAAs. They’re tablets, powders or drinks that contain three of the nine amino acids essential for human health. The three are meant to help build muscle fibre after exercise. But some nutritionists are warning that some amino acids taken as supplements have no real benefits, and that they can become habit-forming. Nutritionist, Rhiannon Lambert and Alex Brassell, Head of New Product Development at My Protein, talk to Winifred Robinson.
