Why security is increasing at self-service checkouts

The first self-checkout till was installed by M&S in 2002. Now we have more self-checkouts per head of population than anywhere else in the world. The big worry for retailers is less the unexpected items in the bagging area, more than the ones that never make it there. Sainsbury’s is installing extra security, including CCTV cameras, to try to cut down on theft. Shoppers in Manchester were asked if they had ever been tempted to steal at self-service checkouts. Winifred Robinson presents.
