Promotion gap starts 'before women have children'

By law, UK companies with more than 250 staff must now publish the average difference between male and female employees.

Of those that have published data, 78% pay men more than women, 13% pay women more and 8% said they had no gender pay gap, based on the median measure.

But Kate Andrews from the Institute of Economic Affairs, says the data in the report "hasn't broken down the information in a way that we can glean anything meaningful from it". And Brenda Trenowden, global chair of the 30 percent club, argues the promotion gap begins “even before women go out to have children”.
