Phil Redmond: What Brookside would be covering it if was still on TV
The writer and creator behind some of TV’s best-loved soaps and drama tells Jill Halfpenny and Jason Mohammad what issues he’d be covering if Brookside was still on the air. The popular Liverpool-based soap ran for 21 years between 1982 and 2003, and covered hard-hitting issues from domestic abuse to incest.
Coronation Street recently came in for criticism recently after a storyline dealt with male rape, a topic that ‘Hollyoaks’, also conceived by Redmond, first covered in British soap.
“If you say soaps aren’t the place to deal with these issues, then life isn’t the place to deal with these issues”, Phil told Good Morning Sunday.
