Diarrhoea vaccine holiday for Finns
A holiday with a difference is on offer to people from Finland – but with a catch: they need to stay close to the bathroom during their vacation in Benin. Scientists testing a vaccine for a common cause of diarrhoea – the ETEC bacteria – gave it to half of the tourists, and a placebo to the other half. All of them had to provide stool samples during their stay. Reporter Mandeep Rai has been to the village where the trial is taking place, to meet some of the volunteers – and the lead scientist Anu Kantele, who’s Professor of Infectious Diseases at Helsinki University.
