Steve McClaren: Southgate's England could be 'surprise package'
Steve McClaren has heaped praise on England manager Gareth Southgate, telling 5 live Sportsweek he's a quiet, calm leader, who brings the experience of playing in major international tournaments to the England set up. 'The key thing for me is he's used to tournaments, which is so so important...he knows what to do'. McClaren believes England are a 'surprise package' that 'can beat any team'. According to the former England manager, Southgate displayed leadership potential from his playing days at Middlesbrough, with McClaren - who was Boro coach at the time - fighting 'tooth and nail' to bring him to the club.
