HMRC will refund some child benefit penalties
Penalty charges issued to 10,000s child benefit claimants are going to be reviewed by HMRC. It says it will look at the cases, from April 2013 to March 2016, and automatically refund people any penalty charge if it decides they have a “reasonable” excuse for not meeting their tax obligation. The review only affects claimants where one member of the household earns above the £50,000 maximum threshold for full child benefit benefit payments. Even then there are specific criteria about people may be eligible for the refund.
