Male humpback whales sing the same song at any one time with individuals asserting their superiority through their vocal embellishments.
Researchers from the University of St Andrews and the University of Sydney studied a whale population, off the coast of eastern Australia, for 13 years.
They found that a cultural 'revolution' event every few years caused the group to discard the song and learn a new simpler one in its place.
