South African playwright on his country's politics
South Africans head to the polls on Wednesday to vote in the first national elections since the resignation of Jacob Zuma in 2018. The ANC has a new leader in Cyril Ramaphosa who is looking to retain the control that the party has held over the legislature since the election of Nelson Mandela a quarter of a century ago. The South African novelist and playwright, Zakes Mda, voted in those elections from self-imposed exile in Canada. He now divides his time between Ohio in the US -- where he works as a professor of creative writing -- and his native South Africa.
