Criminal justice spending: Cutting crime or winning votes?

Prisons in England and Wales are to receive £100m to improve security and cut crime, the government has said.

This follows another £2.5bn pledge from Prime Minister Boris Johnson to create 10,000 extra prison places in order to bring in longer sentences for violent and sexual offenders.

But where is this money coming from and will these measures make the UK safer? Or is it all just a pre-election ploy to get voters on side?

Elizabeth Glinka reports from Birmingham. Matthew Ryder QC, former Deputy Mayor for Social Mobility and Community Engagement, and Conservative MP Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown - the senior Conservative on the public accounts committee and Treasurer of the 1922 Committee - join Emma Barnett in studio.
