Lampedusa’s 'bulging' migrant reception centre
Four years ago, Lampedusa’s bulging migrant reception centre became an EU “hotspot” – a quick turn-around facility which would register, finger print and identify all asylum seekers who arrived on the island before transferring them to centres on the mainland, where they would wait for their claims to be processed.
Meanwhile, the populist Italian deputy Prime Minister, Matteo Salvini, has been closing some of the big reception centres on the mainland, making it more difficult to transfer migrants.
Emma Jane Kirby, who was on the island when the hotspot was first opened, has returned to find out what migrants arriving in Lampedusa today, can expect.
