Russian election: Putin's United Russia suffers losses

Russia's ruling United Russia party has suffered major losses in Sunday's election to the Moscow city parliament, nearly complete results show.

Putin's party lost nearly a third of the seats, but remains on course to retain its majority with about 26 seats. United Russia - for years the dominant force - has become so unpopular it fielded candidates as “independents”.

With most opposition candidates disqualified, there were large scale protests in the run up to the election.

International editor Gabriel Gatehouse reports from Moscow on election weekend.
