COP26: Can the UK lead the race to net zero emissions?

The UK will play host to the United Nations climate change conference in Glasgow, later this year.

The UK government has set out its desire to be world leaders in the fight against climate change, by getting to net zero emissions by 2050.

The feasibility of this goal has however been questioned by former president of the conference Claire O’Neil, who argues “we’ve seen a huge lack of leadership and engagement” and are not currently operating at the level to be world leaders.

A Newsnight investigation in conjunction with Greenpeace also found that despite domestic government pledges, the government is still funding fossil fuel projects abroad.

So how committed is the government to tackling our current climate crisis?

James Clayton reports.
