Can the UK reach a post-Brexit trade deal with the EU?

Following Brexit, the UK is free to strike new deals for selling goods and services around the world. But is it possible for the UK to negotiate a trade deal with the EU before the end of 2020?

The UK formally left the EU on 31 January, but still trades like a member state under a transition period which ends on 31 December 2020.

Talks on the future relationship between the EU and the UK are set to begin in March once the EU's 27 members have agreed the bloc's negotiating mandate.

Policy editor Lewis Goodall reports from Brussels, where EU leaders met to discuss the bloc's future budget plans.
