Coronavirus: ‘Unprecendented’ measures as government battles to keep UK afloat

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has unveiled an "unprecedented" set of financial measures to support the UK economy through the coronavirus pandemic – but are they enough?

The chancellor Rishi Sunak has promised to deliver 'whatever it takes' to keep companies and small businesses afloat during the economic crisis that Covid 19 has brought in its wake.

The man who just a week ago delivered a budget for peacetime promised today to intervene in 'ways that were unimaginable', as his prime minister confirmed Britain was on an economic war footing.

Measures announced yesterday by Prime Minister Boris Johnson left many in the entertainment and hospitality industry angry and frustrated.

Can the wave of measures announced today assuage fears of those whose jobs are at risk from the crisis?
Meanwhile, the government's chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance said it would be a "good outcome" for the UK if the number of deaths from the virus could be kept below 20,000.

Nick Watt reports, and Emily Maitlis is joined in the studio by CBI Director General Carolyn Fairbairn, Labour’s Jonathan Reynolds, and World Health Organisation Spokeswoman Dr Margaret Harris.
