‘I celebrated VE Day with Duchess of Cambridge’s grandmother’
Bletchley Park veteran Betty Lawrie has told ѿý Radio 5 Live about her memories of celebrating VE Day.
Betty Lawrie's job involved monitoring radio messages at the top-secret code breaking centre, and she was on night duty when she saw some of the first messages saying the war had ended in Europe.
She headed to London to celebrate with friends including Valerie Glassborow, the Duchess of Cambridge's grandmother.
She told 5 Live Drive's Tony Livesey that she got "rather pickled” drinking gin with Kate's grandmother Valerie and her sister in Green Park.
"The Duchess of Cambridge is so like her grandmother, full of laughter and joy because Valerie was always full of fun and was such a wonderful person,” she said.
