KT Tunstall: ‘Streaming needs to change’
Musician KT Tunstall says Covid-19 has been “disastrous" for music and streaming services need to support artists.
KT Tunstall has said the music industry and economics of streaming need to change to put “music makers” and "music lovers” at its heart.
The Scottish singer-songwriter, who is supporting the Broken Record campaign started by Tom Gary of the band Gomez, explained why she thinks the current model of streaming is problematic.
A government statement said: “We recognise the importance of transparency and proper remuneration for music artists.
“The Intellectual Property Office is working closely with the music industry to implement the recommendations made in its report into the management of digital data and is also working with the UK Council of Music Makers on how revenue is transferred from streaming services to music artists.”
A Spotify spokesperson said:
“The vast majority of revenue generated on Spotify is paid out to rights holders, including labels, publishing companies, and distributors. To date, we’ve paid out €15+ Billion. By connecting more creators and listeners, and leveraging the strength of our global reach, Spotify is helping fuel the growth of the music industry overall, which just experienced its fifth straight year of growth."
Streaming service Deezer and record labels Sony, Universal and Warner were also approached for comment.
This discussion was part of the ѿý Rethink project looking at how the world should change after the Covid-19 crisis.
