Classics with NOW - Dvořák ‘Mass in D major’
We’ve got another choral masterpiece for you today in Classics With NOW as we bring you our performance of Dvořák’s Mass in D major from December 2013, conducted by Chorus Master Adrian Partington.
Originally tailored to its performance in the small Lužany Chapel in 1892, Dvořák wrote the piece in a simple form: only four solo voices, a mixed choir and organ. Its final shape was formed later the same year when Dvořák arranged it for symphony orchestra.
A rich and evocative piece, the Mass in D major brings together old and new as its traditional text and church modes combine with beautiful nineteenth-century harmonies. We hope you enjoy listening to it this Friday afternoon!
