Are British consumers unwittingly helping to destroy the Amazon rainforest?

Cattle ranching is the single biggest driver of deforestation in the Amazon. New research by the campaign group Global Witness suggests beef reared on illegally deforested land could be making its way onto the shelves of UK supermarkets, with financing from British banks.

The beef companies told Newsnight their cattle purchases were compliant with their legal obligations and their own social and environmental criteria.
