Should only doctors do surgery?
In low-income countries many people lack access to surgical care. Sierra Leonean surgeon Thomas Ashley and Jenny Lofgren of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden explore the idea of training more junior health care workers to perform relatively simple surgical procedures such as groin hernia repair, in the hope of addressing the enormous unmet need for this operation across sub-Saharan Africa.
