Concert celebrates lockdown music

ѿý Radio 5 Live held a virtual concert to celebrate the music listeners have written in lockdown.

It featured live and pre-recorded performances, and was presented by singer songwriter Amy MacDonald and 5 Live presenter Chris Warburton.

Manchester producer Aniff Akinola and Alex Mono performed Lockdown Limbo, which they dedicated to the NHS.

Aniff said music was his “catalyst” and helped him get his emotions out.

The oldest performer was 92-year-old Bruce Kennard-Simpson who wrote Lockdown Blues on his baby grand piano.

“Some people were so lonely through this lockdown,” he said. “And I sat at the piano and thought, ‘I wonder what I can make out of it?’ and this blues came out.”

Over the last few weeks, 5 Live has been asking listeners to send in their music to create the ultimate lockdown playlist: Now That’s What I Call Lockdown!

The British Library has now agreed to preserve the songs in its online Sound Archive.
