Classics with NOW: Suk, Fantastické Scherzo Op. 25
Josef Suk was a Czech composer and violinist, trained in music from a young age. Suk’s early style was influenced by his teacher and mentor, Dvořák, but he developed as a composer at the impact of other composers such as Debussy, Mahler and Strauss.
Suk’s expressive Fantastické Scherzo is certainly tuneful, with both a sprightly woodwind theme and a memorable, lilting Czech tune on middle strings and cellos. Its dazzling and joyous finale is also not to be missed!
This performance by ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ NOW took place in 2002 under the baton of much-loved conductor Richard Hickox, at St David’s Hall, Cardiff.
