Chad's army says it has killed at least 300 rebel fighters who have been fighting in Kanem province.

Chad's army says it has killed at least 300 rebel fighters who had launched a major incursion in Kanem province. However there are fears of an escalating conflict spreading to the capital, N’Djamena.

Residents have been evacuated and historic university collections have been destroyed as a huge fire rages around Cape Town’s Table Mountain.
