Srebrenica massacre: UN court rejects Mladic genocide appeal

Former Bosnian Serb commander Ratko Mladic has lost his appeal against a 2017 conviction for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The UN court upheld the life sentence for his role in the killing of around 8,000 Bosnian Muslim (Bosniak) men and boys in Srebrenica in 1995.

Speaking before the verdict was upheld Ćamil Duraković, former mayor of Srebrenica, says the ruling won't change the belief of many Serbs for whom Mladic was a hero, not a criminal.

"It doesn't help because that side will still deny genocide, still deny the court and the verdicts of the court. So that is the problem that we face 26 years after the war. We still have the Serb side not ready to accept the facts and the judgements of this international court."
