Trinidad and Tobago: Spike in Covid cases

The only Caribbean country on the UK's red list of countries badly affected by coronavirus in the past couple of months, is the island nation of Trinidad and Tobago. Most other English-speaking islands in the region have managed to keep their Covid death toll low. So what's behind the spike in cases and deaths ?

Rhoda Bharath is a Trinidadian vlogger and she told Newsday: “People got together to hold vigils and protests, not observing all of the protocols. Then people were holding private parties, so a series of events that would have led to super spreading.”

“Some portions of the population behave anti-scientific. We have had people who have denied the presence of Covid. We have had people say - and I am talking about people at the highest levels of government here - that we are blessed with sunlight and sunlight will kill Covid. It creates a culture of ignorance.”
