Royal’s ‘honest’ chats with her children about consent
Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, tells 5 Live about the conversations she’d had with her children on sexual consent.
The Countess of Wessex has talked about the conversations she’s had with her children around consent and inappropriate sexual behaviour.
Sophie was speaking to ѿý Radio 5 Live’s Naga Munchetty about her work raising awareness of rape in warfare.
She said her 17-year-old daughter, Lady Louise, has “a natural curiosity” about her work and wants to learn more.
But said it was “slightly harder” to have the conversation with her son who is 13 and at the age where he is “more aware of girls around him”.
“Interestingly, he’s quite conscious of this whole issue of inappropriate behaviour between girls and boys. He does seem quite aware of it, and I think that’s partly to do with schools and partly what they chat about on social media.
“I think it’s about having honest, open conversations as a family, but also hopefully in school settings as well.”
Sophie said she hoped the Everyone’s Invited website, where victims can post anonymous accounts of abuse they have suffered, would make young people feel they could talk about these issues.
“I would hope that this leads on to other conversations about how to deal with it, what more can you do, and hopefully the door is open now,” she added.
