Tokyo 2020: state of emergency to be lifted but concerns remain

Japanese media is dominated by coverage of two stories: the impending lifting of restrictions this weekend and next month’s Olympics. There are two sides to the debate. Japan’s top virologist, Professor Hitoshi Oshitani, is one of those who say the games cannot be safe. Yet there are others who believe adequate measures are being implemented to make them safe. The authorities are starting a vaccination campaign for the 18,000 people due to work at the Olympics, as ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Newsday heard from sports journalist Dan Orlowitz who plans to cover the football competition at the games for the Japan Times:

"I think that right now among the public there's something of a mixed sentiment, in part because of the vaccine rollout which has really picked up speed over the last couple of weeks. We're seeing close to 30m shots administered which is a big step for the country."
