Ethiopia fighting: Reports that Tigray rebels regaining territory
Heavy fighting has broken out in several areas in Ethiopia's northern region of Tigray between rebels and federal troops, reports say. The rebel Tigray Defence Force said it had seized several towns.
Yemane Nagish is from ѿý News Tigrinya, based in Nairobi, and he has been talking to people in Mekele and smaller towns in Tigray.
He told Newsday: “Rebels are regaining some territory. We tried to talk to some residents from some of the towns and they told us they saw the fighters (the Tigray Defence Force) patrolling and passing through the towns. People told us they (the federal forces) were withdrawing with hundreds of military trucks. Some people were chanting and expressing their happiness.”
