Western Sahara: 'We have been waiting three decades'

Western Sahara has been described as a forgotten conflict over many years, with no fighting taking place but little sign of a resolution either. But in the last few months, shots have been fired again, and the status of the area is once again in the headlines. Western Sahara is claimed by Morocco, but it is also claimed by the Polisario Front, which represents the Sahrawi people. They both control a slice of the territory. Before President Trump left office, he recognised Moroccan sovereignty over the territory of Western Sahara.

The Polisario Front’s foreign minister is Mohamed Salem Ould Salek. He told Newsday:

“International law recognises the Sahrawi right to independence. We signed a peace plan but Morocco must comply. We are very convinced that Morocco must withdraw and end its occupation. We have been waiting three decades. We have to find a new ceasefire.”
