Israel: Spike in Covid cases despite successful vaccine campaign

Israel has seen a spike in coronavirus infections in recent days, despite its success in vaccinating the population. Some vaccinated Israelis are now getting the Delta variant of the illness.

Professor Daniel Shepshelovitz is the Deputy Chief of the Covid medicine department and head of the Covid vaccine programme, at the Tel Aviv Medical Centre.

He told Newsday: “Right now we are worried... we have 100 new positive cases a day but many of them are asymptomatic and none of them severe. People went abroad and brought back this new variant. There were outbreaks in schools and some of them infected adults.”

"Right now everything is back to normal here for several weeks now, and we are probably going to be back to masks especially in closed spaces and maybe prevent very large gatherings. Right now things are under control and we hope they stay that way."
